I bring you another installment of Motivational Monday! Over the past week I have been reading and rereading Romans 12: 9-21, which has been the perfect passage to reflect on. Those first two verses alone are quite the challenge:
“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil, cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” (v. 9-10)
Everything about this verse is completely counter-intuitive to our culture. Love must be SINCERE. How many people love SINCERELY these days? They are very often the minority. But the biggest struggle I think we have is to honor others above ourselves. Honoring someone else means you put THEM on the pedestal instead of yourself, you go out of your way to shine a light on someone other than you. That’s self-sacrifice when in our culture most people are simply self-serving.
The one verse that has struck me to my core reading it is verse 12:
“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
I have been convicted by this passage in so many different ways and I am seeking to walk these truths out in love in every area of my life. The being joyful part comes easier for me than the patient in affliction or faithful in prayer part. Those two are dooooozies for me. I already struggled with patience before walking through hard circumstances, but now it seems like the biggest lesson God is trying to teach me. Patience in affliction partnered closely with faithful in prayer. Talk about getting a prayer life.
Don’t ever pray for God to teach you patience or how to pray, because I feel like that’s an automatic door for Him to give you something REALLY, REALLY hard that you’re going to have to patiently walk and pray through, haha! 🙂
I hope this verse encourages you and in the end I always have to remember to overcome evil with good. It’s not easy and it means taking the high road a lot of times, but in the end that honors the other person and it honors God which is most important of all.
